Ukulele intervista a Craig Brandau

1.            Can you tell us something about your musical background. / Come descriveresti il tuo background musicale?

I began playing guitar at the age of 9 and grew up during the 1960s.  I was therefore influenced by the folk and rock music of the era.  At the same time, I also listened to my parent’s record collection and was greatly influenced by what was termed here in the U.S. as “popular” music.  This included many of the great vocalist and of course, Jobim’s Bossa Nova.

2.            What’s your favorite music?  Do you listen to everything or do you prefer only one kind of music?

I have very eclectic tastes.  I listen to all styles of music except for the current, rock, metal and rap.  This music leaves me cold and seems manufactured only to make money rather than art.
I’ll go on binges of sorts where I’ll listen to nothing but classical guitar music (David Russell is my favorite), then onto Joe Pass’s, “Virtuoso” series; then back to my regular playlist which includes fingerstylist, Laurence Juber and others.  I don’t think there’s a day that goes by that I don’t either listen to or play a Jobim piece.

3.            How long have you played ukulele? / Da quanti anni suoni l’ukulele?

                About 12-13 years.

Da circa 12-13 anni

4.            Why did you start playing? / Come hai conosciuto l’ukulele?

I had hit a musical plateau with my guitar and had heard Lyle Ritz play while on our first trip to Hawaii.  I found the ukulele’s facility for chord melody to be amazing and very cool sounding.

5.            How did you learn to play the ukulele?  Did you use the internet, books, DVD? Internet, libri, dvd… o altro?

My first ukulele was a tenor Fluke that had come with a plastic fretboard.  I had Fleamarket Music (http://fleamarketmusic.com) upgrade the fretboard to rosewood once I’d discovered I wanted to play with low G tuning.
I was able to teach myself how to play due to my years on the guitar and the fact that I can read music.  However I did have one or two lessons with a local ukulele teacher who put me on the right track.  I was trying to use a thumb pick which many of the players use, but it wasn’t for me and I discovered this then.
My first book was the purple Ohta-San Ukulele Master’s book.  All of the songs are in ukulele-friendly keys and I was able to figure out chord melody lines right away.  Also the fact that I’d spent many years with my mentor, Howard Heitmeyer, working on chord melody arrangements, really helped.

6.            What kind of music do you like to play with your ukulele?  Which size of ukulele do you prefer?

I play mostly jazz and pop standards.  Fingerstyle chord melody is where I live, musically.  I also only use low G tuning because it gives me notes below middle C.  However, I have nothing against reentrant tuning and will use it for strumming along with others, etc.

7.            You’ve surely played a lot of types of ukuleles.  Can you describe to us the differences between them?

The most obvious is size.  The second is wood choice and construction.  Either the ukulele is made of laminate or solid wood.

8.            Which ukulele size do you suggest for beginners? / Quale taglia di ukulele consigli a chi deve iniziare?

My wife, Cali Rose (http://calirose.com), teaches two classes a week to senior citizens and finds that the sopranos tend to be too small for most of them to make clear-sounding chords and I’d have to agree.  I think a concert or tenor is the best.  I stay away from baritones since they’re tuned and sound more like a guitar.

9.            What’s your favorite ukulele brand?  Which brand would you suggest for beginners and less experienced players?

Both Cali and I have custom Ko’olau ukuleles (http://koolauukulele.com) that we adore.  They are a bit pricey, but we find them worth the money and play them constantly.  Also, Cali is a full-time working musician and needs a superior and roadworthy ukulele.  Ko’olau’s offer the sound that I’m looking for – more classical guitar like.  Noa, the main builder, is really a master and at such a relatively young age.
There are so many great makers today!  The Chinese companies have really filled the void for mid-priced ukulele.  They’ve really come along way over the years.  Cali’s second ukulele was an all-Koa Pono tenor that we still own.
What I tell beginners and others is:  The best ukulele there is, is the one you play and love!  That first tenor Fluke I owned, I played until it needed new frets.
I think, for the money, the Flukes and Fleas are great.  I teach history at a high school and keep a tenor Fluke in my classroom.  They’re nearly indestructible!  Cali and I also have three or four scattered throughout our apartment.

Io e Cali ne abbiamo tre o quattro sparsi nell’appartamento.

10.          Which parts of the ukulele are important (strings, wood, bridge…) to increase the quality?  How do we understand if our ukulele is a good ukulele? A quali caratteristiche guardi tu maggiormente?

For beginners, strings are a huge deal.  If one owns a laminate ukulele, the Aquila will really bring out the sound.  The action (string height between string and fretboard) is also important.
I use Savarez guitar strings.  I have a link on my website to the exact gauges I use, etc. (http://ukulelecraig.com/links.html)
What is a good ukulele?  Again, loving the ukulele you currently own and playing the life out of it.

11.          Ukulele has become so popular in Italy and all over the world recently:  What do you think about this and what are the reasons it’s growing?

I think mostly it’s the accessibility of the instrument.  One can just learn three or four chords and they’re good-to-go.  It’s also the marketing along with reasonably priced instruments.  Here in the US, it has become quite popular with all ages of people.

12.          Do you have any suggestions for ukulele beginners?

Have fun!  Play music you enjoy!  The ukulele is a great, intimate friend.  They travel well and can be played while in bed watching TV!

Divertitevi! Suonate e godetevela!

13.          Would you like to say something to our ukulele friends?

I do have a book coming out soon titled, “Jazz Chord Solos for the Ukulele.”  Hal Leonard is publishing it and I should have it sometime soon.  The book is not for beginners, but for those wishing to learn more complex chord melody arrangements.
Almost all of the arrangements are by my mentor, Howard Heitmeyer.  The book also comes with a CD so one can hear how the song should or could be played.
If one goes to my website, they can sign up for my blog list and I also occasionally offer free arrangements and lessons.  I currently have, “Yesterday,” listed for those wishing to learn this song as a chord melody piece.

Thanks much for interviewing me!
