Gran intervista ukulelosa a Kimo Hussey

1. Can you tell us something about your musical background? Come descrivereste il vostro background musicale?

That part of my musical background which has had the biggest influence is a very strong interest and love of music.  I've enjoyed this interest in music for as long as I can remember and it has lead not only to enjoying listening but also having an active part in creating music as well.  Music was also my college major.  In order to satisfy an interest in choirs and religious music, I studied to become a choral conductor.  Now that I am fully retired, it has been quite easy for me to embrace the worldwide renaissance in ukulele.  I now travel worldwide doing ukulele workshops and concerts ----- and whatever else seems appropriate in nurturing the world's growing interest in ukulele.

Quella parte della mia formazione musicale che mi ha influenzato di più è un interesse ed un amore molto forte nei confronti della musica. Da quando ho memoria ho sempre avuto interesse verso la musica e questo mi ha portato non solo ad apprezzare l’ascolto, ma anche ad avere una parte attiva nella creazione di quella stessa musica. Inoltre mi sono specializzato in Musica al liceo: per soddisfare il mio interesse nella musica sacra e corale, ho studiato per diventare un maestro di coro. Ora che sono effettivamente in pensione, mi è risultato particolarmente facile avvicinarmi alla riscoperta mondiale dell’ukulele. Ora viaggio per il mondo facendo seminari di ukulele e concerti, qualsiasi attività che sembri appropriata per nutrire il crescente interesse internazionale verso l’ukulele.

2. What’s your favorite music? Do you listen to everything or do you prefer only one kind of music? Qual è il vostro approccio globale alla musica in generale?

I don't have one favorite style of music.  Hawaiian music, folk music and pops are generally those styles I generally prefer.  I do listen to a lot of different music though I do not listen to everything.  I've also become quite interested in music therapy and do enjoy learning and listening to music specifically designed to soothe.  In this regard, ukulele qualifies as a very relevant methodology for providing relaxation.

Non ho un genere di musica preferito. Generalmente preferisco la musica tradizionale hawaiana, la musica folk e vari tipi di pop. Ascolto molta e varia musica, ma non ascolto proprio tutto. Ultimamente mi sono interessato alla musicoterapia e mi piace ascoltare ed imparare dalla musica composta specificatamente per rilassare. A questo proposito, l’ukulele si qualifica come metodologia molto importante per il relax.

3. How long have you played ukulele? Da quanti anni suonate l’ukulele?

I started learning to play ukulele when I was 5.  As I am currently 69, I've been playing over 60 years ----- and enjoying every single moment of doing that.

Ho iniziato con l’ukulele quando avevo 5 anni. Dal momento che ora ho 69 anni, lo suono da più di 60 anni e apprezzo ogni singolo momento in cui lo faccio.

4. When did you start playing ukulele and Why? Come avete conosciuto l’ukulele? Chi o cosa vi ha spinto ad iniziare a suonarlo?

I started to learn to play ukulele when I was very young ----- 5 years old.  Because of ukulele's growth and popularity of ukulele which began in the late nineteenth century, ukulele in my youth was just as much a "toy" as it was a means of producing wonderful music.  Ukuleles were in most homes and it was quite easy to pick one up at will to play.

Ho iniziato ad imparare a suonare l’ukulele quando ero molto giovane, a cinque anni. Grazie alla crescente popolarità dell’ukulele che è iniziata nel tardo diciannovesimo secolo, durante la mia giovinezza questo non era più di un semplice “giocattolo” con cui mi limitavo a produrre della musica meravigliosa. Era facile trovare degli ukulele in moltissime case ed altrettanto usarli per suonare a volontà.

5. How did you learn to play the ukulele?  Did you use the internet, books, DVD? Quando avete acquistato il vostro primo ukulele, come avete iniziato a capire come si suona?  Dove vi siete orientati per imparare a suonarlo? Internet, libri, dvd… o altro?

I don't think I actually bought my first ukulele until I was well into adulthood.  During my youth, the ukuleles we enjoyed playing were either passed down from friends or relatives, or my parents bought them for us.  My uncle first got me started playing ukulele when I was 5 ----- but I've not had an instructor since.  As an ukulele player, I am self-taught.  I did not use the Internet, books or DVDs to learn to play ukulele though I use them a lot now to promote ukulele.

Non credo di aver comprato il mio primo ukulele se non quando divenni adulto. Quando ero giovane, ci si scambiavano gli ukulele tra amici o parenti, a volte gli stessi genitori ce li compravano. Mio zio mi spinse ad imparare a suonarlo quando avevo cinque anni, ma allora non avevo alcun insegnante. Come suonatore di ukulele sono autodidatta. Non ho usato internet, manuali o DVD per imparare a suonare l’ukulele anche se oggi li uso molto per promuoverne tecniche e cultura.

6. What kind of music do you like to play with your ukulele?  Which size of ukulele do you prefer? Che genere di musica preferite suonare con l’ukuele? Qual è la vostra taglia preferita di ukulele (sopranino, soprano, concert, tenore, baritono, banjolele…)?

I enjoy playing any style or kind of music I think is fun to play on the ukulele.  It is an incredibly versatile instrument and capable of playing in any style that suits the player.  My size preference for ukulele I play is first tenor, then baritone.

Mi piace suonare qualsiasi stile di musica che ritengo mi faccia divertire con l’ukulele. È uno strumento incredibilmente versatile e capace di gestire qualunque stile che interessi al suonatore. La dimensione preferita per gli ukulele che suono è principalmente quella tenore e poi quella baritono.

7. You’ve surely played a lot of types of ukuleles.  Can you describe to us the differences between them? Voi che avete sicuramente provato diversi modelli di ukulele, potreste descrivermi la differenza secondo voi?

Indeed I've played a lot of different styles of ukulele and the #1 difference between all of them is SOUND.  There is no one ukulele type that can be considered the ultimate ukulele as it is impossible for one specific instrument to have all the various sounds ukulele can produce.  This is definitely one of the most wonderful things about ukulele in that there are so many different "sounds" one is able to enjoy.  There is the sound of low G versus high G.  There are different sounds that can be achieved through different string configurations ----- 4, 5, 6 or 8 string configurations each of which can have different string thicknesses.  There are different sizes of ukulele which can affect sound.  There are differences of sound between ukulele manufacturers and even custom ukulele makers.  As the popularity of ukulele continues to grow, more and more builders are learning to make ukulele and this too adds to the differences in sound one can experience.  Amplifiers and electronic enhancements to ukuleles also affect sound significantly.  The differences in sound amongst various ukulele continues to grow without end in sight.

Ho invero suonato con molte tipologie di ukulele e la differenza numero uno tra tutti quelli è il SUONO. Non esiste un ukulele definitivo dal momento che è impossibile per uno specifico strumento coprire tutte le varietà di suono che l’ukulele può produrre. È una delle cose più straordinarie dell’ukulele dal momento che è possibile godersi così tanti “suoni” differenti. C’è il suono del sol basso contro quella del sol alto. Ci sono diverse sonorità che è possibile ottenere con le varie configurazioni delle corde; come quelle a 4, 5, 6 e 8 corde, ognuna delle quali ha un diverso spessore delle corde stesse. Anche la taglia dell’ukulele produce variazioni nel suono. Ci sono differenze anche tra i produttori di ukulele e anche creatori di ukulele personalizzati. Con la crescita della popolarità dell’ukulele, sempre più costruttori imparano nuove tecniche di lavorazione contribuendo significativamente alla varietà di suoni proposti. Le differenze acustiche tra i vari ukulele continuano a crescere a dismisura.

8. Which ukulele size do you suggest for beginners? Quale taglia di ukulele consigliereste a chi deve iniziare?

I suggest one start with a concert size ukulele.  For those who may have large or long fingers, I recommend starting with a tenor.  If you live in an area that has a fairly large selection of ukulele to choose from, I suggest starting with an ukulele that feels most comfortable.

Suggerisco di iniziare con un ukulele concert. Per coloro che potrebbero avere dita grandi e lunghe, consiglio di iniziare con un tenor. Se la zona in cui si vive ha una vasta scelta di ukulele, suggerisco di iniziare da quello che si reputa più comodo.

9. What’s your favorite ukulele brand? Which brand would you suggest for beginners and less experienced players? Oltre alla taglia dell’ukulele, quale marca raccomandereste a chi è alle prime armi e quale a coloro che vogliono uno strumento valido per suonare seriamente, facendo serate dal vivo?

I do not have a favorite ukulele brand.  Neither do I recommend any specific brand for beginners or advanced musicians.  My recommendation is to play as many different ukulele as one possibly can and then purchase the one which sounds best to YOU. 

Non ho una marca preferita, né ne raccomando una specifica per I principianti o gli esperti. Raccomando di provare più tipi possibile di ukulele e poi scegliere quello che “suona” meglio al musicista.

10. Which parts of the ukulele are important (strings, wood, bridge…) to increase the quality?  How do we understand if our ukulele is a good ukulele? Quali sono i parametri (tipo di legno, corde, tastiera, ponte, ecc…) che l’ukulele deve avere per essere considerato buono? A quali caratteristiche guardate voi maggiormente?

This is a great question.  Every single part of an ukulele is important to it's production of good sound, looks and playability.  Learning about these various physical aspects of ukulele is a very meaningful part of good instruction.  So it is critical when one chooses an instructor to make sure that instructor knows as much about the instrument and how it's made as he/she does about learning to play.  The degree to which we do this successfully is the same degree to which we understand if the ukulele we play is a good one.

Questa è una bella domanda. Ogni singola parte dell’ukulele è importante per la produzione di un buon suono, per l’aspetto e per la manovrabilità. Imparare i vari aspetti fisici dell’ukulele è parte integrante di un buon apprendimento. È di importanza critica scegliere un insegnante che sappia tanto suonare bene quanto conosca gli aspetti tecnici dello strumento. Tanto meglio gestiamo queste cose quanto più ci rendiamo conto se il nostro ukulele è un valido strumento.

11. Ukulele has become so popular in Italy and all over the world recently: What do you think about this and what are the reasons it’s growing? Abbiamo assistito, in questi ultimi anni, ad una diffusione crescente dell’ukulele in Italia e nel mondo: secondo voi, a che cosa si deve questo boom?

Indeed ukulele's popularity around the world has skyrocketed and continues to grow.  My reflection for this growth is that ukulele is FUN to play and that is the biggest reason why its popularity continues to grow everywhere.  Ukulele provides a very easy way for any player to quickly and effectively get into the process of making music and it is the act of embracing that musical process which results in fun and enjoyment.

La popolarità dell’ukulele in giro per il mondo è infatti partita a razzo e continua a crescere. Secondo me avviene perché l’ukulele è DIVERTENTE da suonare e questo è il motivo principale della sua fama. L’ukulele consente a qualsiasi musicista di imparare facilmente e velocemente il processo di produzione musicale ed è proprio questo processo che lo rende divertente e simpatico da suonare.

12. Do you have any suggestions for ukulele beginners? Che consiglio vi sentite di dare a chi vuole incominciare a suonare l’ukulele, o comunque è alle prime armi?

Indeed, I do!  No matter how you are being taught to play ukulele, always insure that having FUN is consistently present.  Having fun with ukulele is the principal means of energizing our involvement to continue to learn and play.  The enjoyment ukulele provides is limitless!!!! Its continued growth.

Certo che sì! Non importa come hai imparato a suonare l’ukulele, finché ti assicuri sempre di DIVERTIRTI. È l’energia principale che ci spinge a continuare ad imparare. Il divertimento che un ukulele può portare è senza limiti e in continua crescita!!!!
